About the project

  • Caltrans District 7 / LA Metro
  • Los Angeles, CA
This $50.3 million design-build project with Metro recently received ENR’s best California Regional Airport/Transit Project Award. The project consisted of preparing a supplemental PSR/PR and the final design and construction of Metro’s Union Station/Patsaouras Plaza Busway located in downtown Los Angeles. Key challenges included complex ridge widenings, relocation of the bus loading platform, new pedestrian circulation elements and the closure of vehicular traffic access between Union Station and Patsaouras Plaza.

Project Description

Key project elements included freeway widening and alignment revisions which meet Caltrans’ and Metro’s requirements for the proposed bus platform and buffer lanes; a Storm Water Data Report (SWDR), drainage and utility designs involving coordination with Metro, Caltrans, LADWP, LAPD and SCG; and widening the busway bridge on both sides, addition of an elevator tower and constructing a new pedestrian structure and bus station canopy in the median of the busway bridge. NCM was the prime design consultant responsible for design management, coordination with Caltrans, coordination with utility owners to relocate their facilities, and civil, roadway, drainage, structural design, stage construction and traffic handling. NCM was responsible for oversight of subconsultants for architectural and mechanical design, geotechnical engineering, and traffic engineering.
